“We want to honour those old stories that the old people told us.”
Since Tjanpi's inception in 1995, Niningka has been a pioneering weaver and sculptor, emerging as a notable basket weaver by 1998. Together with Yaritji Connelly she travelled to Minyerri near Katherine NT in 2002 to re-teach Aboriginal women there the art of coiled basketry.
Niningka is a highly creative artist who has made great leaps forward both in technique and the style of her weaving. She was one of the first to use raffia, the first to create patterns into the sides of her work using coloured raffia, the first to attach whole carved animals to her baskets and the first to create designs and pictures with wool.
