Lucy Nelson was born in Warburton Ranges, Western Australia in September 1967. Lucy spent her childhood in Warburton where she learnt Ngaanyatjarra, and later English at Warburton community school.

Once her formal education was completed, Lucy moved 200 kilometres north to the community of Warakurna, and worked as an assistance in the Women’s Centre. Lucy later married and raised five children, a girl and five boys. Her children are now grown, and live across the South Australian border in Pipalyatjara with her four grandchildren.

Lucy started weaving in late 2015 at a Warakurna Tjanpi Desert Weavers skills workshop, learning different techniques from senior Warakurna artists. Since then, Lucy has focused upon making small central desert animals such as ninu (bilby).
