Artist Biography

Evelyn is a Pitjantjatjara woman living in the remote community of Irrunytju, Western Australia. The community of Irrunytju is located in Western Australia, approximately 800 km south west of Alice Springs, and 1700 km north east of Perth and has a population of approximately 200 Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra people. As such, Evelyn is a fluent in Pitjantjatjara, Ngaanyatjarra and English.

Evelyn begun basket weaving in 2016, learning from her mother Rene Nelson along with her sister Lucy Nelson. At a skills development workshop in 2017 she learnt to sculpt with minarri grass and wool. In addition to Tjanpi & painting, Evelyn enjoys jewellery making, painting brightly coloured gum nuts and burning holes through them to create earrings and necklaces.
