Tjanpi (wild harvested grass), bush dyed raffia

D15cm x H19cm

This coiled vessel was created through a workshop that took place in Papulankutja and Warburton communities. The focus for artists was to experiment with the coiled basketry technique, remembering those original Tjanpi artists and paying homage to their skills and ideas of creating shapely works. This piece has been made using natural coloured raffia and wool.

'We made these lovely baskets in all different shapes and sizes, building them up and out, making them taller. Our mothers and grandmothers used to make baskets in various shapes like this. Those first ladies who made Tjanpi were here in Blackstone, and so it is important we keep doing this too, using these coiled skills to try new shapes, and teaching the young ones how to do it.'

- Maimie Butler, Papulankutja (Blackstone)
